Fathom This Mystery If You Can!

Fathom this mystery if you can,
Of our allotted short lifespan,
A century long or so at most,
And then we ‘give up the ghost’!
From where we come and why:
Can these queries anyone satisfy?
The purpose of our brief stay,
Can anyone this for certain say?
Is it that we just didn’t exist before
Us our mothers’ warm wombs bore?
Or, did we long pre-exist our birth
In this lifetime here on Planet Earth?
Our coming here: did someone dictate,
Or did we ourselves choose this fate?
Are we here since we wanted it so,
Or did someone else force us to go?
When our brief stay here is done
(Not much after it has begun),
Where shall we have to proceed
(If we still remain alive indeed)?
And, if we live thereafter anywhere,
What will happen with us there?
For these queries we must confess
The most we can do is simply guess,
But what’s stranger than this by far
Is that we aren’t sure if we truly are:
We can’t be certain if we really exist
In the manner we confidently insist.
What if we aren’t as we appear
But are simply a thought mere
That the Cosmic Mind conjures
And that for a short time endures
And that is very soon ‘unthought’:
A trick that the Lord has wrought?
