None Can Answer, None Can Tell

Billions came and then went

Not long after their advent,

On being made finally to die,

Do you ever wonder why?

Billions came and deeds did,

Good, neutral and sordid,

A long history thus to make,

But, for what purpose sake?

Where have all these billions fled,

And all they thought, did and said?

Perhaps it is, and this now I share,

Listen to these words if you care:

I really think that it could be so

That these all were just a show

That the Cosmic Mind conjured

And for a brief while endured,

Then vanished without a trace,

In a rush, as if in frenzied race,

After having played their role,

Over which they had no control,

Doing the deeds to them assigned

By the One Grand Cosmic Mind.

Maybe it is that they never were

(Not in the manner that we aver),

As beings with name and form,

Who their own deeds perform,

But each were only a thought

That the Cosmic Mind wrought

To last a moment, or maybe less,

(Though I’m not sure, I confess).

Who knows who and what they were,

And where they went on leaving here,

Those vast billions who came before

And on Earth with us are no more?

None can answer, none can tell,

If they still remain, may they be well.
