With All My Years, What Did I Achieve?

With all my years, what did I achieve?

On departing, what legacy will I leave?

For all this time, what have I to show?

What will I leave behind when I go?

What to this world did I contribute?

Did I do anything of great repute?

What, if any, major mark did I make

For the wellbeing of the world’s sake?

Of what grand service did I prove to be

For which posterity may remember me?

Oh! Nothing that’s so notable, I fear,

I didn’t do anything remarkable here,

Nothing worth recounting, I confess,

Nothing that could greatly impress

Those who gauge how life’s been led,

From our birth right till we are dead,

By deeds they regard as impressive,

Taking this to be the reason to live.

Should I then hang my head in shame

For not doing anything quite the same?

But that said, this here I must also say,

That moments came along my life’s way

When love stirred deep inside my heart.

May I recall this when from here I depart,

Knowing thus my life wasn’t spent in vain,

For some love I felt amidst life’s great pain.
