A Simple Tip for a Day Well-Spent

Life is a gift, given to us by God, The Divine, The Universe, The Totality, Existence or call It what you will. In fact, each moment that we get to live is a gift in itself. Viewed in this way, our whole life, which, typically, consists of a vast number of moments, actually consists of a vast number of gifts, each of which is given to us free of cost and apparently without our asking.

Each moment of each new day that we live being a precious gift, what is the best way we can use it?

The best way to make use of the gift of each new moment is to use it to try to be the best version of our self in that particular moment and to try to do in and with that moment the best that we can. Each moment, then, is an opportunity to be and to do the best that is possible for us to at that particular point in time. The gift of each moment is meant to be spent in this best way. It is not something to be simply squandered. Nor is it a burden to be grudgingly endured and somehow passed.

An easy and, at the same time, effective method to help us make the best use of the many gifts that we get each new day in the form of so many new moments is making a daily To-Do list. Here is a simple way of doing it:

After waking up in the morning and freshening up, sit comfortably, close your eyes and request your Inner Voice to tell you things that you need to do that day. Silently listen as your Inner Voice begins to ‘speak’ to you. As and when suggestions come to you from your Inner Voice, note them down in a pad or on a laptop or phone or whatever other device you generally use to jot things down.

Your Inner Voice might tell you that you need to meet a colleague, to finish a project, to go someplace, or to purchase a particular item. Or, it might remind you that you need to apologize to someone, to thank someone else, to shampoo your hair, to cut your nails, to peel a pod of garlic that you need to for a particular dish that you want to make for lunch, to download a book from the Internet, to clean your wardrobe or whatever. No matter what activity—‘big’ or ‘small’—your Inner Voice tells you to do that day, jot it down. Carry on doing this until your Inner Voice stops giving you such suggestions.

At the end of the process you are likely to have a fairly substantial list of important things you need to do for the day. If you spend the gifts of the moments that you receive that day doing these things, among others, you are likely to have used these gifts—or your day as such—in a good way.

Towards the end of the day, before you turn in to bed, you can go back to your To-Do list for the day and see if you have done all the things that your Inner Voice had suggested to you that morning for you to do in the course of that day. If you have left some things out, you might like to plan to do them the next day and include them in your next day’s To-Do list.

When, as we begin our day, we note down things in our daily To-Do list that our Inner Voice tells us we need to do that day, each item we record registers in our mind, even though we might always not be conscious of this. This increases the possibility that we will do that task and will not forget to. In that way, if we maintain a daily To-Do list, there is a greater likelihood of the things we need to do each day being done than if we did not have this practice. An additional benefit of the daily To-Do list practice is that it adds order, structure, discipline, direction and purpose to our every day, and, with that, to our life as such.

The early morning To-Do list daily exercise is a great way to help us spend our every new day in the best possible way, doing in and with the moments that are gifted to us each day the best that we can.
