It Just Can’t Be Just This!

Is it just this that You sent me for,

An entire lifetime here to endure?

Please tell me that it isn’t so,

Surely the answer must be ‘No!’,

For, I think it could hardly be

That You’d ever do this with me.

Do tell me there’s much more

Reason that You sent me for,

More than what meets the eye,

My heavy heart to thus satisfy,

Purpose greater than just to spend

Some time dragging on till the end,

Passing days and years, one by one,

Simply because it has to be done,

A punishment I must undergo,

The reason for which I don’t know,

A long sentence I must complete,

Or some onerous chore or futile feat.

Please tell me that You agree

That this just could never be,

That there’s a plan greater behind

The seemingly pointless daily grind,

And that I can rest unshakably sure

That there’s to my life much more,

More significant that’s still untold,

Which You’ll cause to soon unfold,

So that to myself I can firmly say,

When here on Earth on my last day,

That all said and done, and overall,

It was well worth my having to ‘fall’

From Your abode ‘above’ ‘down’ to Earth

And then to take this human birth

And here a lifetime having to stay

Till You decided to take me away.
