Neglect’s Grim Fallout

No higher purpose did you teach
For which we should try to reach
Than to enjoy, to have great fun,
And good grades in class to be won.
Only to do this much did you care
For your role as parent to prepare
Us to enter the wide waiting world
Into which soon we were hurled.
Is it, then, at all any great surprise
That many of us fell and failed to rise,
And others didn’t bloom as they could,
Being badly maimed, stunted for good,
Since though much to us you did provide,
You neglected your task to be our guide.
Your intentions were good, no doubt,
But see your neglect’s grim fallout!
