Turn Within and Meet The Friend

The Friend isn’t distant, far away

(As some people might like to say).

Turn within, you’ll find Him inside,

Yes, in yourself He does reside.

There’s no need to go someplace far,

For, He’s with you wherever you are,

No matter where you happen to be,

He keeps with you constant company.

No rite or ritual need you perform,

Or by strict rules need you conform,

Nor need you go to any pilgrim place

In order to meet Him face-to-face.

No money do you need to spend,

Nor need you bow low and bend

Before anything that is said to be

Between Him and us an intermediary.

All one needs is to turn within,

No matter the place one is in,

To find the Friend present there,

The One who dwells everywhere.

Be there in the company of The Friend,

And with Him daily some time spend.

Listen to all that He might say,

May this be your way to pray.

Long prayers there’s no need to say,

At fixed times all through the day,

Nor need you offer any sacrifice,

Or present a gift at a great price,

Or go without food on a long fast,

Or memorise a tome from the past.

Simply turn within and spend

Some time there with The Friend.
