We’ll Never Again Believe Any of Your Lies!

Oh how we trembled, oh how we feared!
Oh how real to us all your talk appeared,
From books you cited from the distant past
That drowned us in terror, leaving us aghast.
‘The Word of the Lord’ this was, so you said
(We knew not it was your handiwork instead).
The god of whom you with fervent faith spoke,
And whose name you’d so passionately invoke,
Was swift to anger, and so he we did dread.
In his name, oh my, such misery you spread!
You spoke of the Devil, oh this scared us so!
And of his evil minions on and on you’d go.
Along with this, you warned us of Hell’s fire,
Ah, you made life to seem so grave and dire!
In Hell, you said, our torture wouldn’t end
If before your god our knees didn’t bend,
Or even if we dared to doubt and disobey
Something that your old books might say.
This, in brief, is how by you we were reared,
On firm faith in a god whom we greatly feared.
But now when it’s known this was sheer deceit,
Your tune you’ve changed to appear oh so sweet,
And so you now claim that your god loves us so,
And he’s most kind, you say this we must know.
But we now know better and so discern your plot,
Your long centuries of deceit we have not forgot.
God we now know isn’t he whom to us you sold,
That wrathful ogre in the tales that to us you told,
Whom you now seek to show as very kind and just,
No! In your words we’ll now simply refuse to trust.
To know the true God we’ll now not turn to you,
As in our foolishness in times before we used to do,
For, we’ve found the God who our hearts satisfies,
And so, we’ll never again believe any of your lies!
