A ‘Small’ Task for a Cause That’s Big

This morning, I spotted a pretty bird,
The soft flapping of its wings I heard.
In its tiny beak it carried a little twig,
A ‘small’ task for a cause that's big:
Making for its babies a warm, cozy nest,
Where they could hatch and safely rest.
Early in the morning very busy at work,
Not for a moment did it its duty shirk.
In its work it seemed to greatly delight,
Driven by joy for its babies not yet in sight.
Oh what precious joy this seemed to be!
Was there in this a lesson meant for me?
Maybe it was that my duties I should do,
All the many tasks I’m called upon to,
For the sheer joy that doing so might give,
What a beautiful way that would be to live!
Yes, for this joy, and for no other sake.
May to this wisdom I very soon awake!
