What Might Be Life’s Ultimate Purpose?

Have you ever wondered what the real purpose of our life on Earth, this brief stay of ours here, might be? Do we, in fact, have an ultimate purpose at all for being here? If we do, have you ruminated on what all we might need to do in order to fulfill that purpose?

These questions seem not only interesting but also personally important because they appear to touch on the very reason for our existence. No doubt many people have reflected on these questions down the centuries and have come up with various tentative answers.

Be that as it may, perhaps these questions are more meaningfully discussed if viewed from another direction—from the position of the One who has sent us here, i.e., God, instead of our own. And so, instead of asking what, if anything, is our ultimate purpose in being on Earth for the short while that we get to be here and what we might need to do in order to fulfill it, perhaps the issue is perhaps better posed as follows: What is, or might be, God’s purpose in creating us and making us spend the time He has allotted for us to be on Earth? Put this way, the direction of our questions about life’s purpose turns to God and away from us: to God’s purpose in making us be on Earth for a time, not our purpose in being here.

And what might God’s purpose be in all of us—in fashioning us into the beings that we seem to be and making us spend a while on Earth? Might it simply be in order for God to express His love by having us, and all the many other life-forms that exist in the vast Universe, as His children on whom He can shower His love, through what He does for us, gives to us and is for us? If this is so, then, the actual purpose of us being here is not for us to achieve anything on our own as such. Rather, it may essentially and simply be for God to express and share His love with us—that is to say, for us to serve as recipients of His love.
