From Those Books My Mind Turned

From those books my mind turned,
And their very sight I now spurned,
Their burden being unable to bear,
While on the shelf at me they stare,
Shocked at this great change in me,
Asking why from them I want to flee,
And why no longer I am enthused,
By their charm no longer amused,
The reason for this that I can provide,
For why my passion for them has died.
Oh! If this joy they come to know,
Welling up within the mind’s hollow,
From His words, in an inaudible voice,
And the thrill that makes one rejoice,
They’ll then learn the reason why
They my heart no longer satisfy,
And why I now cannot bear to look
More than I need to into any book!
