They Said I’d Find You in a Book

They said I’d find You in a book,
So, that’s where I began to look.
Long years in this way I spent,
Over fat tomes for hours bent.
In each I thought You I’d found,
And for a while to it was bound,
But quite soon this would wane
(For blind belief's an awful strain).
To another book I’d then turn,
Thinking there You I’d discern,
Once again the same occurred,
Until at last this fact I inferred
(Or maybe was so led to know):
This wasn’t the way at all to go;
From every book I must unbind
And inside myself You I’d find.
When all those books I forsook
(This my journey decades took),
I found You present in my heart,
Where You were from the start!
