We’re Here Now, But Soon We’ll Go

We’re here now, but soon we’ll go,
It’s really short, this passing show.
A brief bit of time we spend here,
Some decades it is at most mere.
What brought us here, how and why,
Our curiousness we seek to satisfy,
With various claims that we believe,
Discordant theories that we conceive,
Each boasting that its theory does tell
The story of our being here most well,
In their beliefs being most confident,
Championing it with faith fervent.
Their theories I read, and as I did so,
This one fact I came clearly to know:
It’s impossible for us mere mortal men
(For this far surpasses our limited ken),
To understand the great secret of why
We come here, spend a while and die,
And where from here we’ll have to go.
All of this we just can't now know,
But maybe when our body we’ll shed,
The day that they pronounce us dead,
The curtains will lift, and then we’ll see,
What lies behind this grand mystery!
